As a soccer fan, I have to point out that the European "Ultras" are not synonymous with fascism. Also, Ultras are different then hooligans, as hooligans try and hide there support for which ever team (making it easier to get lost in a crowd) while Ultras will proudly wear there teams colors.

If your team has a history being a `right-wing`team, like Lazio does, then you`re ultras are going to be far-right as well. But if your, say, Celtic you`d probably be left-wing, anti-fascist republican.

It`s also important to note that this kind of right-wing thuggery is a problem across European soccer; Beitar Jerusalem games are often indistinguishable from Klan rallies. I`m very glad that I`m an MLS fan, not only because I`m supporting local soccer, but because the kind of right-wing extremism isn`t here.

Soccer/Football. The only sport where more fans can be killed at a game than goals scored in the match they're watching.

This is, of course, horrendous news. This type of violence is an affront to civilization, full stop.

Having said that, unless you go through life condemning the game of baseball for this, please don't use this incident to bash soccer.

Football hooliganism has atrophied in the UK ;but seems to be live on the continent.
Here's a recent statement: Football is a game for gentlemen supported by hooligans;whereas rugby is a game for hooligans supported by gentlemen.

The US does have the kind of sport thuggery found in Europe, its a fact. Things can get dicey when a team wins a championship, but otherwise American fans are a relatively docile lot nowadays.

I think it's because sports fandom here is different than Europe. Seems to me in my third hand observations of European sports fandom that a lot of it's cultural. I don't know. I do agree though that our fans are relatively docile these days.
